United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2724 have once again stepped up to support local families. The group, representing salaried workers at Algoma Steel Inc., approached Sault Area Hospital Foundation this summer with a goal of helping the youngest and newest members of our community – newborns. With a gift of $40,762, USW Local 2724 will purchase a new infant warmer for the Sault Area Hospital (SAH).

“This year, our members received the largest profit sharing payout in Algoma’s history,” Rebecca McCracken, President of USW Local 2724, shared. “The members decided to share the dues collected from the profit sharing throughout the community. We wanted to support local families, and we know this gift will achieve that goal – bringing a new infant warmer to our local Hospital. Thank you to our members for continuing to give back to our community. They are truly living our motto: Steelworkers make good neighbours!”

Over 800 babies are born at SAH each year. This year, SAH’s maternity, labour, delivery and pediatric care professionals will need nearly $200,000 in new and replacement equipment. An infant warmer, like the one purchased by USW Local 2724, is needed in every birthing room. Infant warmers are used daily in all deliveries as well as in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Having a well-equipped NICU is essential to keeping new families together, here at home.

Local 2724 have been supporters of Sault Area Hospital Foundation for over 15 years, donating over $190,000 in total. This gift is USW Local 2724’s fourth donation in as many years.

“We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of United Steelworkers Local 2724,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director of Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “Their membership keeps coming forward, year after year, to support local families needing care at our hospital. Thousands of patients have been touched by their recent gifts, with support for our Laboratory, Medical Imaging Department, and now our Women and Children’s Health Program. We’re so grateful to have these incredible community partners in our corner.”

On behalf of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors, Staff, and the patients this donation will impact, thank you to all the members of USW Local 2724; your gift will ensure the care provided at Sault Area Hospital continues to be outstanding.
