Local Support helps SAHF & USW Local 2724 exceed $100K Goal on GivingTuesday

Sault Area Hospital Foundation and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2724 set a goal to raise “$100K in a day” to fund 30 vital signs monitor on GivingTuesday. Every donation made on GivingTuesday, up to $50,000, was matched, thanks to USW Local 2724. Not only was this goal met, but surpassed because of our generous community – a grand total of $163,660 was raised in one day, funding an incredible 49 monitors!

USW Local 2724 made an extraordinary impact on GivingTuesday by leading the SAHF campaign with their $50,000 match. Their generosity and commitment to supporting local healthcare has inspired others to give, proving once again that steelworkers make great neighbours!

“USW Local 2724 is proud to have partnered with Sault Area Hospital Foundation on another great program for local healthcare. We’re overwhelmed by the support of our community. Matching donations for GivingTuesday isn’t just an investment in equipment – we’re investing in the health and well-being of our families, friends and neighbours,” said Bill Slater, President of USW Local 2724.

The largest gift on GivingTuesday came from George Stone & Sons, who were inspired to match Local 2724’s support. The local construction company donated $50,000 toward the GivingTuesday initiative. “As a community partner for almost 110 years, George Stone & Sons is committed to giving back. SAHF is an important piece of our community – raising funds for critical equipment, like the vital signs monitors, for our hospital. The generosity of USW Local 2724 and our community inspired us to make this gift,” said Randy Stone, President of George Stone & Sons.

SAH’s monitors were over 10+ years old and needed to be replaced. A vital signs monitor can show care providers their patient’s blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate and temperature at a glance. Care teams rely on this information to assess patient conditions and provide treatment. Each monitor costs approximately $3,325, and is solely funded through community donations to SAHF. Almost 1/3 of the 123 monitors were funded earlier this year, when 10 local construction industry businesses came together for Heart Month (February). Now, only 38 monitors remain to be funded.

“Seeing community partners, donors and organizations come together to support this cause, was just another reminder of how great things can be achieved when we all come together!” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director of Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “There is always work to be done, equipment to fund, and it’s wonderful to see our community answer the call. Year after year, the committed support we get from not just individuals, but our local unions and corporations, makes outstanding care possible at Sault Area Hospital. Thank you!”

Funding vital signs monitors is just a small piece of the work of the Foundation – who commit to provide SAH with $5 million in funding for medical equipment each year! If you would still like to give a gift this holiday season, there are many ways to still have an impact on local care.
