For Giving Tuesday, Green For Life (GFL) Environmental Inc. has put their heart into a gift for our community. The home-grown North American waste management company has made a $20,000 donation toward cardiac care needs at Sault Area Hospital.

Giving Tuesday is a nationally and internationally recognized day, following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On Giving Tuesday, individuals, charities, and businesses come together to celebrate giving and participate in activities that support charities and non-profits; to thank, help, give, show kindness, and share what they have with those in need. While Giving Tuesday is the world’s largest generosity movement, it acknowledges that everyone has a way to give – whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbour or stranger, showing up for an issue, or giving to an important cause. It is a global movement, that unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities, and the world.

GFL’s donation this Giving Tuesday will have a direct and immediate impact on care at Sault Area Hospital, going toward the purchase of an echocardiography unit – a high priority need. The “echo” machine is specialized ultrasound that can take live images of the heart at work. An echocardiogram helps physicians identify, diagnose and monitor issues, like heart defects or heart disease. While the new machine replaces an older unit, it offers a new 3D imaging feature – giving our team a different view of potential issues.

“While this past year and a half has been challenging for many families and businesses, it has also solidified our commitment to health care in the community, specifically in Sault Ste. Marie. We hope this will just be the beginning of our relationship with the Sault Area Hospital Foundation” said Chris Dovigi, Area Director – Western Ontario, GFL Environmental. “This is only one of the many ways that GFL can reach everyone in the community that supports GFL. We are strong believers in giving back locally, and are committed to being Sault Ste. Marie’s premier supporter to many organizations for many years to come.”

“It’s wonderful to see GFL – a major North American company – continue to acknowledge their roots in Sault Ste. Marie by supporting our local hospital,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “Their ongoing local generosity, with all of the causes they support, shows their commitment to the people of Sault Ste. Marie. The impacts of this latest gift will be felt by thousands of residents, and their families, who may depend on cardiac care at Sault Area Hospital. It’s about keeping patients close to home.”

On behalf of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors, Staff and all the patients this donation will impact, thank you for dedication to care in your home community. This gift will help continue to make outstanding cardiac care possible at Sault Area Hospital.
