On May 31st, Angela Zoellner of Sault Ste. Marie, ON won a $79,462.50 jackpot in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAHF) May 50/50 draw. Her lucky number (M-5960285) was drawn electronically, and she was called. And called. And called!
Angela was away, without phone service, when the Foundation was initially trying to contact her. She finally got the message over the weekend, and connected with the Foundation team on Monday morning to confirm her win.
Angela is a retired lab technologist, and worked 40 years at Sault Area Hospital. She has been supporting the 50/50 since it started in November 2019.
“When I was working in the lab, I saw technology change so much. Every new piece of equipment was so important, and the only way we got it was thanks to community support through fundraisers – like the 50/50,” Angela said.
“There are so many behind-the-scenes areas that are so important to the hospital, like the lab. I always bought my tickets knowing how grateful I was for new equipment while I was working at SAH. I wanted to support the hospital – I never expected to win!”
Angela wasn’t the only winner with ties to Sault Area Hospital this month, as May’s Early Bird works in the Cancer Care Program at SAH. Shannon Pawelek of Sault Ste. Marie, ON was the lucky winner of $15,000 on May 17th with ticket M-9785306.
“Nobody understands the needs of our hospital better than those who work here, and we are grateful for their continued support,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director for Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “This month, we had two winners with connections to providing care at SAH. Its so great to see SAH staff and retirees winning thanks to their support of the 50/50. And it’s not surprising – they know: every time you buy a ticket, you’re supporting care here in our community, and we’re so grateful for your support.”
